Scott Weider - Kite Biography

My kite flying experience begin in 1992 while my wife Pauline and I vacationed on a small island paradise, Block Island, located 10 miles off the southern New England coast.  There I purchased my first stunt kite a "Rainbow Stunter." I had always wanted to fly after watching them on the California coast in the late 70's.

In 1994, I met Robert "MAC" MacBroom, a quad line flyer, designer, an innovator of the "Magic Quad Sticks." Shortly after that he introduced me to the, "High Flyers Flight Team" who flew regularly at, Brenton Point, State Park, in Rhode Island. Now, I had official “American Kitefliers Association” ( AKA) Individual and Team, National Champions, for friends and support!

Brenton Point, was the site of the 1986 AKA National Convention, so with a prime flying location, and master flyers support, I had all I needed to be a happy, happy stunt kite flyer. From there I was off and running! With my child like excitement and a whole bunch of practice, I have been able to secure some serious friends, fun and success!

My official stunt kite competition career started in 1994 at a local regional event, the "Newport Stunt Kite Championship", held in Newport, RI, where I placed 2nd,  in Novice Precision. And then it all started! In the fall I attended the National Convention in Wildwood, NJ and there witnessed our hometown team the "High Flyers" capture their National Championship victory.  After 7 full years of competition on the circuit, they promptly announced their retirement and expressed a wanting to pass the torch to myself and other fledglings hungry to learn and willing to travel the kiting lines so to speak. Over the winter of 1994/1995 I was sworn in as a member of the new dualine team, "High Flyers Too."

In some form or fashion many cultures have been using kites for thousands of years.  Whether it is for competitive, religious or recreational purposes, kiting seems to bring people together.  For me, in the last 14 or so years since learning to fly, (and loving every minute of it!) meeting great people and making friends across the globe is the thing that has kept me coming back for more.  I have learned more about myself through my kiting friends, than any other of my life's experiences.

As I enter into a new year, a new season of kite flying and meeting new friends, I wish to extend to an invitation to you, (if you have not met me on the field as of yet), please come on over and introduce yourself to me. I would love to meet a new friend especially one with kiting in common. I also have a passion/love for what I call a good, "slice of life" in still photography.  I’m also an award winning photojournalist and love to talk shop about that too!

I am glad to have met you in cyber space, and I am looking forward to a real live encounter with you on this blue and green planet we call home. Until then, may a gentle breeze be always at your back!
